Academy Award-winning actor Russell Crowe shocked a lot of people this week when he Tweeted that he had captured a UFO on camera. The actor claims that he had a time-lapse camera set up in his office in Sydney, Australia to photograph fruit bats. It turns out that the movie star created the hoax to build buzz for his new film.

The video consists of three time-lapse photos. Crowe insists that he set up the camera to capture fruit bats that were appearing outside of his office. Youtubers shot the footage down and the actor tried to defend his evidence.

Marc D’Antonio, chief video analyst for the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) tells TMZ yesterday that Crowe’s UFO is misidentified due to the camera’s slow exposure time.

Other people are saying that Crowe hoaxed the UFO to create buzz for his new movie, Broken City. An Australian representative of Crowe said that the footage was filmed four years ago by cinematographer Duane Manwiller.

“Duane is a friend of Russell’s and shot that while he was in Sydney about four years ago,” Crowe’s manager Grant Vandenberg said. Vandenberg has no idea why Crowe released the footage.

Crowe’s new film Broken City has nothing to do with UFOs or aliens. Broken City is in theaters now.
