6 Ways College Admissions Offices Game Their Rankings

This story first appeared on the ProPublica website.

As college-bound students weigh their options, they often look to the various statistics that universities trumpet—things like the high number of applications, high test scores, and low acceptance rate.

But students may want to consider yet another piece of info: the ways in which schools can pump up their stats.

“There’s no question about it,” said David Kalsbeek, senior vice president for enrollment management and marketing at DePaul University. “There are ways of inflating a metric to improve perceived measures of quality.”

Some of these tweaks—such as a more streamlined application—can actually benefit students. Others serve to make the admissions process more confusing. Here’s a rundown.

1) Quickie, often pre-filled out applications

Express applications—sometimes known as “fast apps,” “snap apps,” “V.I.P. applications” or “priority applications“—are often pre-filled with some student information and require little if anything in the way of essays. And especially when they’re accompanied with an application-fee waiver, what’s a student got to lose? Not much, fans of fast apps argue.

The school, meanwhile, has a lot to gain. The tactic, designed to broaden the pool of applicants, can help super-charge application numbers. Drexel University and St. John’s University—the only two private colleges among the top 10 for most applied-to colleges in 2011—both market broadly and use fast apps.

Both schools received roughly 50,000 applications in the fall of 2011, according to U.S. News data. Both schools enroll roughly 3,000 freshmen.

The Game of Life

CHECKMATE MINDED

I remember so many times my old man would head out the door to work saying something like… “gotta get back in the game“  or “The rat race never ends” as if to brace himself for something unpleasant he had to face yet again.  Being a youngster at the time; I of course lacked the understanding of what it was like for him to enter that daily grind, but over the years the cumulative effects were clear enough to see.   With a few added years under my belt I realized just how wide spread this notion was; of life being just one big game… and it bothered me a bit on account of all the years of hearing how precious and sacred life is. This duality continued to perplex me as I made my way in life and in the fullness of time I came to understand why so many feel like they got thrust  into an endless game called life; with no referees, no owners manual and rules that change without notice.  The Rat Race.

I had come to see that not only did most folks buy into this ‘game mentality‘, but that society itself is designed to reinforce that notion in nearly every application.  Consider how we are programmed to embrace competition as a way of being superior to others.  Consider the many verbal ways we mutually reinforce that mindset with comments such as; “Life is a game and whoever has the most toys at the end wins” or the idea that something you want is “Fair Game”… and then there are even mantras of competition in romance & love what with the ideas of “Starter Husband“  and “Trophy Wife” added to our lexicon without so much as a murmur of dissent.  The parameters for this game are established for us, and we have no say in that unless we become so good at the game we actually become one of the elite gamesters, but that is a really exclusive club, with membership currently frozen…no new members are being considered at this late stage of the game.  See what I mean about it being embedded into our everyday language.  It’s so subtle, and the programming so pervasive that most folks go their whole life without noticing any of this.  They just keep on playing the game hoping to grab that brass ring!   See, It’s everywhere once you train your mind to see it;  It’s everywhere, it’s an artificial, fabricated reality, which we’ve been conditioned for generations to only see it as normal.

In 1860 Milton Bradley introduced a new board game called The Checkered Game of Life, which over time became shortened to just “Life.”  The game is so popular it is still in production today and continues to be among the most popular of  parlor games, especially in North America.  When you pause to think about it, aren’t almost all games we play designed to reinforce this notion of separation and competition?  Even in solitaire we are competing against ourselves.   I cannot think of many games humans play which are based on cooperation and unity.  Some might suggest that this spirit of competition is good for us, and in some ways I suppose it is, but  mostly it is just another mechanism of control by those who seek to determine our collective destiny without our collective consent.  To maintain this control over so many people it takes constant indoctrination and reinforcement at every level of society, and a show of force to ensure compliance; which exactly describes the world we live in today.

Of course the rat race becomes more complex the longer one plays it.  When engaged with so many others on a daily basis who are blindly locked into the game, you get sucked into playing along, forming a consensus reality collective where each member has to keep playing the game by whatever set of rules are currently in effect. Before you know it you become leveraged into continuing to play the game, because everything in the rat race is crafted intentionally to do just that.  Job, house, car, family, school and so on to infinity & beyond….once you’re hooked, they got ya.

As we have seen in recent weeks, the great shining lie pushes back against the great awakening now underway by trying to pull us all back into the fear mode.  To be sure, the non-stop saber rattling over North Korea and raging gun control ‘debates’ are designed to keep our collective minds off of what ‘they‘ are doing to the world banking system; but they are also intended to draw us back into that mindset of fear now that the game is coming to what many are considering to be the final phase before the introduction of an even darker game just down the road from where we now find ourselves.  Just like in the Matrix movie, the game of life is all around us, it is every where, and nowhere.  We can see it everywhere we look, yet never find it if we search for it.  Also just like the movie, the game of life is a deceptive fabrication pulled over our eyes to prevent us from seeing a vastly different reality which can free us from this game.  All we need do to find the exit from this game is to pay attention to the things the powers that be don’t want us knowing about.  Just like to find out who controls you, just look to see who you aren’t allowed to criticize. The Rat Race abides.

With the frequency of false flag events increasing, and the eerie similarities to 911 what with the deadly poison Ricin allegedly  sent to several government officials right after the Boston Marathon bombing; I think it is now safe to say that the dreaded endgame may be upon us.  You see, the game isn’t going exactly the way they want it to just now, what with this spiritual revolution turning into a raging prairie fire under their collective asses; so they are turning up the heat in every way they can to beat us back into submissive compliance.  Remember, it’s the nail that sticks up that gets hammered down.

Don’t know about you, but anymore I get a bit nervous whenever I hear of another government terror drill planned, as that seems to be the first best way to detect a coming false flag attack.  And did you get a look at Obama’s face at the press conference after his gun control issues were all voted down?  There simply was no concealing the anger on that mans face as the elites continue to be exposed for the parasites they are.   Over the last few posts I have been saying that I feel the endgame is very near.  Are you feeling me now?  I think we have just turned onto that dark country road where the lights all go out and the scarecrows come to life…does anyone else hear the banjo music?

Guest Post: The Chess Game Of Capital Controls

Submitted by Jeff Clark of Casey Research,

The best indicator of a chess player’s form is his ability to sense the climax of the game.

–Boris Spassky, World Chess Champion, 1969-1972

You’ve likely heard that the German central bank announced it will begin withdrawing part of its massive gold holdings from the United States as well as all its holdings from France. By 2020, Bundesbank says it wants half its gold reserves stored in its own vault in Germany.

Why would it want to physically move the metal from New York? It’s not as if US vaults are not secure, and since Germany already owns the gold, does it really matter where it sits?

You may recall that Hugo Chávez did the same thing in late 2011, repatriating much of his country’s gold reserves from London. However, this isn’t a third-world dictatorship; Germany is a major ally of the US. So what’s going on?

Pawn to A3

On the surface, it may seem innocuous for Germany to move some pallets of gold closer to home. Some observers note that since Russia isn’t likely to be invading Germany anytime soon – one of the original reasons Germany had for storing its gold outside the country – the move is only natural and no big deal. But Germany’s gold stash represents roughly 10% of the world’s gold reserves, and the cost of moving it is not trivial, so we see greater import in the move.

The Bundesbank said the purpose of the move was to “build trust and confidence domestically, and the ability to exchange gold for foreign currencies at gold-trading centers abroad within a short space of time.” It’s just satisfying the worries of the commoners, in the mainstream view, as well as giving themselves the ability to complete transactions faster. As evidence that it’s nothing more than this, Bundesbank points out that half of Germany’s gold will remain in New York and London (the US portion of reserves will only be reduced from 45% to 37%).

Sounds reasonable. But these economists remind me of the analysts who every year claim the price of gold will fall – they can’t see the bigger implications and frequently miss the forest for the trees.

Check

What your friendly government economist doesn’t reveal and the mainstream journalist doesn’t report (or doesn’t understand) is that in the event of a US bankruptcy, euro implosion, or similar financial catastrophe, access to gold would almost certainly be limited. If Germany were to actually need its gold, regardless of the reason, any request for transfer or sale would be… difficult. There would be, at the very least, delays. At worst such requests could be denied, depending on the circumstances at the time. That’s not just bad – it defeats the purpose of owning gold.

But this still doesn’t capture the greater significance of this action. First, it reinforces the growing recognition that gold is money. Physical bullion isn’t just a commodity, a day-trading vehicle, or even an investment. It’s a store of value, a physical hedge against monetary dislocations. In the ultimate extreme, it’s something you can use to pay for goods or services when all other means fail. It is precisely those who don’t recognize this historical fact who stand to lose the most in an adverse monetary event. (Hello, government economist.)

Second, here’s the quote that reveals the ultimate, backstop reason for the move: Bundesbank stated it is a “pre-emptive” measure “in case of a currency crisis.”

Germany’s central bank thinks a currency crisis is really possible. That’s a very sobering fact.

We agree, of course: history is very clear on this. No fiat currency has lasted forever. Eventually they all fail. Whether the dollar goes to zero or merely becomes a second-class currency in the global arena, the root cause for failure is universal and inevitable: continual and perpetual dilution of the currency.

Some level of currency crisis is inescapable at this point because absolutely nothing has changed with worldwide debt levels, deficit spending, and currency printing, except that they all continue to increase. While many economists and politicians claim these actions are necessary and are leading us to recovery, it’s clear we have yet to experience the fallout from spending more than we have and printing the difference. There will be serious and painful consequences, sooner or later of an inflationary nature, and the average person’s standard of living will be greatly reduced.

And now there are rumblings that the Netherlands and Azerbaijan may move their gold back home. If this trend gathers steam, we could easily see a “gold run” in the same manner history has seen bank runs. Add in high inflation or a major currency event and a very ugly vicious cycle could ignite.

Checkmate

If other countries follow Germany’s path or the mistrust between central bankers grows, the next logical step would be to clamp down on gold exports. It would be the beginning of the kind of stringent capital controls Doug Casey and a few others have warned about for years. Think about it: is it really so far-fetched to think politicians wouldn’t somehow restrict the movement of gold if their currencies and/or economies were failing?

Remember, India keeps tinkering with ideas like this already.

What this means for you and me is that moving gold outside your country – especially if you’re a US citizen – could be banned. Fuel would be added to the fire by blaming gold for the dollar’s ongoing weakness. Don’t think you need to store gold outside your country? The metal you attempt to buy, sell, or trade within your borders could be severely regulated, taxed, tracked, or even frozen in such a crisis environment. You’d have easier access to foreign-held bullion, depending on the country and the specific events.

None of this would take place in a vacuum. Transferring dollars internationally would certainly be tightly restricted as well. Moving almost any asset across borders could be declared illegal. Even your movement outside your country could come under increased scrutiny and restriction.

The hint that all this is about to take place would be when politicians publicly declare they would do no such a thing. You could quite literally have 24 hours to make a move. If your resources were not already in place, even the most nimble of us would have a very hard time making arrangements.

Once the door is closed, attempting to move restricted assets across international borders would come with serious penalties, almost certainly including jail time. In such a tense atmosphere, you could easily be labeled an enemy of the state just for trying to remove yourself from harm’s way.

The message is clear: storing some gold outside your country of residence is critical at this point, and the window of time for doing so is getting smaller. Don’t just hope for the best; do something about it while you still can. The minor effort made now could pay major dividends in the future. Besides, you won’t be any worse off for having some precious metals stored elsewhere.

If you’re moved to take action, know that you’re not alone. It’s critical that you take these first steps now, while you still can.

The best chess players in the world aren’t that way because they can see the next move. They’re champions because they can see the next 14 moves.

You only have to see the next two moves to “win” this game. I suggest making those moves now before your government declares checkmate.
