Rep. Peter King, Mayor Bloomberg Agree: Boston Bombing Shows We Desperately Need MORE Surveillance

You knew it was coming. Former DHS official Stewart Baker got the ball rolling with his atrocious attempt to portray the ACLU and the EFF as hacker-and-terrorist sympathizers.

MAYOR-BLOOMBERG-la (Copy)Tech Dirt
April 23, 2013

A few politicians bravely read the tea leaves (while the tea was still brewing!) and declared the Boston bombing to be Exhibit A in the argument for tougher immigration laws.

Now it’s time for those who love surveillance cameras to stand up and claim a piece of this tragedy as their own. An article in the Wall Street Journal collects a few quotes from some political camera enthusiasts who believe this successful manhunt justifies increased surveillance by law enforcement.

“They had to piece together I don’t know how many thousands of videos,” said Rep. Peter King, a New York Republican who is on the House Committee on Homeland Security. “I think CCTV [closed-circuit television] cameras are much more needed in urban areas.”

The FBI and police already had “how many thousands of videos,” and yet it’s still not enough. More cameras are “needed.” King continues this line of thinking in an interview with MSNBC.

So, I do think we need more cameras. We have to stay ahead of the terrorists and I do know in New York, the Lower Manhattan Security Initiative, which is based on cameras, the outstanding work that results from that. So yes, I do favor more cameras. They’re a great law enforcement method and device. And again, it keeps us ahead of the terrorists, who are constantly trying to kill us.

Constantly? That’s an interesting ridiculous take on reality. (The odds of an American being killed by a terrorist attack are effectively zero.) King must spend plenty of sleepless, terrorized nights chatting with Mike Rogers, whose fear of hackers prevents him from catching any shuteye. Either that or he’s been chatting with the FBI and the NYPD who it seems can barely go a week without creating and shutting down another terrorist “plot.”

[Peter King worries about terrorists... but only if they"re Muslim. He"s perfectly fine with white Irish terrorists, seeing as he went on record during the 80s stating his support for the IRA, which notably bombed a shopping center during the Christmas season, killing six and injuring 90. He was very concerned about their civil rights. Those were his kind of terrorists. These ones, not so much.]

New York mayor Michael Bloomberg also feels the bombing in Boston justifies extensive surveillance in New York City… or more than it already has.

“The Boston bombing is a terrible reminder of why we’ve made these investments—including camera technology that could help us deter an attack, or investigate and apprehend those involved,” New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said this past week. He added the network now has the ability to “alert police to abnormalities it detects on the street, such as an abandoned package that is left on a corner.”

Personally, I could do without the “terrible reminders” and the “investments.” Bloomberg claims the tragedy justifies the surveillance, but there’s very little effort being made to curtail either sides of this false equation. New York law enforcement seems to spend most of its time hanging out in mosques or shoving non-white male youths up against the nearest wall for a little of the old stop-and-frisk.

There’s a chicken-and-egg thing going on here. Apparently, we “need” to increase surveillance because awful things happen. But when awful things fail to happen, no one in the surveillance “community” takes the time to wonder if perhaps the current surveillance efforts might be excessive. Surveillance, like any other vehicle of government control, only expands over time. Various government agencies will once again be asking you to trade privacy for security. The problem is these agencies can’t promise security. The only thing they can truly guarantee is “taking” your privacy.

Graph Shows Who Is And Who Isn"t Paying Their Fair Share of Taxes

In response to 55% of Americans Say Their Income Taxes are Fair; 46.6% Paid No Income Tax in 2011 one seriously misguided soul responded “your hate for low income people disturbing”.

The above response was humorous because the math shows a large number of people are unhappy even though thy pay no income taxes at all. Nowhere did I state or imply any hatred of anyone.

On a far more credible note, I received an email from Ironman at the Political Calculations blog who posted this chart on “Who Really Isn’t Paying Their Fair Share of Income Taxes?

click on chart for sharper image

I asked Ironman to explain the chart. Here is his reply.

We used U.S. Census data to model the total aggregate income earned by individual Americans for each $ 100 increment of income in 2009 to create the “blue” income distribution bell curve using regression analysis, which we originally did as part of another project, where we modeled the total money income distribution of Americans.

We then took the Tax Policy Center’s data for the percentage of tax units without income tax liability for given levels of income and modeled that as well – and in doing that, we also get the percentage of tax units that do have income tax liability over the same income range.

We then multiplied the percentage of tax units with income tax liability by the total amount of aggregate income earned within a given amount of income to determine the portion of that aggregate U.S. income that is subject to income taxes.  That result is represented as the “red”-shaded bell curve on the chart.

The unshaded region under the “blue” total aggregate income curve is then the portion of income earned by Americans that is not subject to income taxes.

What If?

In a followup email, I asked Ironman what the result would have been, if a 100% tax on all income above $ 1 million been in place. To that question he replied …

By our calculation, the U.S. government would have taken in $ 800 billion more in tax revenue if it had taxed people making more than $ 1 million at 100 percent, according to IRS data from 2008, the year Ryan used as his base point.”

Thus, even taxing people making over $ 1 million at a rate of 100% would not have balanced the budget. Of course, if you tax anything at 100%, you are not going to get anywhere near the amount theoretically expected.

Some might point out interest income, but others would point out disability and food stamps. Specifically, I would like to point out Unwilling to Work; 25% in Hale County AL Collect Disability, 14 Million Nationwide; A Simple Solution.

Simply put, if you pay people enough to do nothing at all, you are going to encourage a lot of fraud by people willing to do nothing.

Regardless of what you think about top income earners, the system is setup to encourage fraud and avoidance at both ends of the scale.

Who suffers? Those in the middle.

Perhaps it’s time for a consumption tax, excluding food, medicine, and essential clothes. Perhaps some combination of flat income tax in conjunction with a consumption tax excluding food, medicine, and essential clothes.

My only fear in suggesting such a thing is government nearly always screws things up by implementing things in a matter that will make matters worse.

Video From US Prison Shows Inmate Held Down, Pepper Sprayed at Close Range

In what promises to be a major public relations headache for Maine’s Department of Corrections, local media have released raw footage of a restrained inmate being subdued with pepper spray and then left unattended for over twenty minutes.

The story and video first appeared in this week’s Maine Sunday Telegram, and were further reported on by the Portland Press Herald, with a shorter clip accompanied by some two hours of additional video.

The raw footage depicts Windham Correctional Center inmate Paul Schlosser being bound to a restraint chair, flanked by five prison officials – three of them in riot gear – protesting that guards “watch his arm,” and subsequently being pepper sprayed in the face at close range by Captain Shawn Welch.

It is unclear how footage of the June 2012 event found its way into the hands of Maine’s media, though the state’s Department of Corrections has already assigned an investigator to locate the source of the leak.

Schlosser was reported to have received treatment for a self-inflicted wound to his arm and was on multiple medications for bipolar disorder and depression prior to the incident.

Captain Welch was initially fired over his actions by Scott Burnheimer, superintendent of the medium-minimum security facility – a decision that was overturned by Maine’s corrections commissioner, who reduced the penalty to a 30-day suspension.

Meanwhile, Judy Garvey, a spokesperson for the state’s Prisoner Advocacy Coalition, criticized the department’s focus on the source of the leak instead of concentrating its resources on preventing similar incidents from occurring in the future. “Trying to find out how the information got into the hands of a reporter shows a reluctance to have transparency. It reeks of government heavy-handedness in oversight,” she told the Press Herald.

Garvey further recommended that the Department of Corrections look to create an advocacy group for prisoners’ treatment.

Study Shows Soda Pop and Other Sugary Drinks Kill About 180,000 People Every Year

It is alarming to know that most Americans drink sugary beverages. In fact a massive propaganda (advertisement) campaign started back before my time. Soda pops were only 5 cents according to my Dad.

However, at that time sodas and other drinks were likely made with real sugars as opposed to high fructose corn syrup which is used in most drinks today as a form of sweetener (a cancer inhibitor). In fact researchers from University of California-Los Angeles found just that. An excerpt from a Mike Adams article reads;

Their findings, which were published in the journal Cancer Research, could help explain earlier studies that have linked ingestion of fructose with pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest forms of the disease.

“These findings show that cancer cells can readily metabolize fructose to increase proliferation,” Dr. Anthony Heaney of UCLA’s Jonsson Cancer Center and colleagues wrote in 2010.

“They have major significance for cancer patients given dietary refined fructose consumption, and indicate that efforts to reduce refined fructose intake or inhibit fructose-mediated actions may disrupt cancer growth,” he said.

Americans, much more than people in most other industrialized nations, consume an incredible amount of fructose, mainly high fructose corn syrup, which is a mix of fructose and glucose used largely in sodas, bread and a host of other processed foods.

A recent study by the American Heart Association highlights the following:

  • Sugar-sweetened beverages may be linked to about 180,000 deaths in the world each year.

  • Countries in the Caribbean/Latin America had among the highest death rates from diabetes due to consumption of sugary beverages.

  • About 25,000 deaths in the United States each year may be associated with sugar-sweetened drinks.

The study goes on to read;

Sugar-sweetened beverages are consumed throughout the world, and contribute to excess body weight, which increases the risk of developing diabetescardiovascular diseases and some cancers. Using data collected as part of the 2010 Global Burden of Diseases Study, the researchers linked intake of sugar- sweetened beverages to 133,000 diabetes deaths, 44,000 deaths from cardiovascular diseases and 6,000 cancer deaths. Seventy-eight percent of these deaths due to over-consuming sugary drinks were in low and middle-income countries, rather than high-income countries.

“In the U.S., our research shows that about 25,000 deaths in 2010 were linked to drinking sugar-sweetened beverages,” said Gitanjali M. Singh, Ph.D., co-author of the study and a postdoctoral research fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, Mass.

Researchers calculated the quantities of sugar-sweetened beverage intake around the world by age and sex; the effects of this consumption on obesity and diabetes; and the impact of obesity and diabetes-related deaths. Of nine world regions, Latin America/Caribbean had the most diabetes deaths (38,000) related to the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages in 2010. East/Central Eurasia had the largest numbers of cardiovascular deaths (11,000) related to sugary beverage consumption in 2010. Among the world’s 15 most populous countries, Mexico — one of the countries with the highest per-capita consumption of sugary beverages in the world — had the highest death rate due to these beverages, with 318 deaths per million adults linked to sugar-sweetened beverage intake.

The study even found that Japan, which as a nation consumes less sugary beverages than any other, was indeed the healthiest in terms of deaths linked to sugary beverages.

The fact is many Americans are unaware that soda and other sugary drinks are unhealtthy to them as they were brought up or raised with soda commercials pushing the propaganda any way they could. Now in 2013, some see this type rhetoric as a way to possibly limit and or tax beverage makers who choose to push unhealthy products. At least thats what the studies author Gitanjali Singh says.

Will the government soon jump in claiming that Americans health is now at risk adding some sort of tax as with cigarettes?

Global Leading Indicator Shows Slowdown Dead-Ahead

While the sell-side has been vociferous about the fact that earnings are troughing, that consensus growth expectations are not miraculous, that equities are discounting that awesome reality; it appears Goldman Sachs’ ‘Swirlogram” – which we initially discussed here – is pointing to what we have been seeing for months – a slowdown in their global leading indicator dead-ahead.

The GLI is rotating from expansion to slowdown rapidly… the drivers of the weakness are the Baltic Dry Index, Global PMIs, Global New Orders Less Inventories, and Goldman’s Aussie and Canadian Dollar TWI.

This is Goldman remember… not some tin-foil-hat wearing blog…

Zero Hedge
